Karen’s journey into sand sculpting began in 1994 while working in a pottery studio, where she quickly became hooked on the gritty, physical, and challenging art form. Thirty-one years later, her passion continues stronger than ever.
In 1998, Karen entered her first international sand sculpting competition, and by 2001 she was working full-time as a freelance sculptor, traveling the globe to bring her creations to life. She specializes in fantasy and whimsical themes but delights in sculpting a wide variety of subjects.
To date, Karen has competed in over 170 Masters Level international sand sculpture contests, earning an impressive collection of awards—including 30 First Place titles and 5 World Championship titles.
Beyond competing, Karen is a dedicated organizer of sand sculpting events across Canada, working with clients such as the Canadian National Exhibition, the Pan Am Games, and Parks New Brunswick. She also served as the lead consultant and judge on all four seasons of the popular CBC series Race Against The Tide (2021–2024).
Karen’s work has taken her to 14 countries and counting, collaborating with sand sculpture companies and friends worldwide.
