Jeff Strong loves pushing sand to its physical limits while creating shapes with beautiful form. To him, art and physics are equal parts of a beautiful universe. Jeff's early attempts at sand castles finally took off when he met Pacific Northwest master sculptors in 2001. He joined their team and learned the skills that opened a world of opportunity and friendship.

The overwhelming impact of sand sculpture in his life inspired him to create his most iconic sculpture, “Consuming Pastime,” which shows a sculptor being devoured by the dragon he was creating in the sand. The grand arch of that dragon’s neck foreshadowed a recurring theme in Jeff’s work.

Gravity-defying arches and empty space are often part of his compositions, which emphasize form over realism. Jeff recently retired after 38 years developing computer systems at University of Puget Sound, so perhaps now he can ride that sand dragon instead of keeping it at bay.
