Bruce Phillips And Matt Long

Bruce Phillips

Birthplace: San Diego, California

Current home base: Carlsbad, California

If you haven’t met sand sculptor Bruce Phillips, it is definitely time to meet this artist. Bruce first started in the sand sculpting business over 25 years ago by shoveling sand for one of the grandfathers of sand sculptor Gerry Kirk, founder of the World Sand Sculpting Academy. After a while of shoveling and watching the process, he started to do some simple architectural sculpting and then progressed to more elaborate sculpting. He is known throughout the world from Tokyo to Amsterdam. As a professional sand sculptor, he creates amazing works of art at festivals and competitions and does corporate and private events as well. In addition to sand, Bruce also works with other mediums such as poly foam or Styrofoam. Bruce is an artist at heart and he loves all things beach and sand!

Matt Long

Birthplace and current home base: Staten Island, New York

As Matt says on his website, “I carve beautiful things in the sand just about anywhere you can imagine from rooftop gardens and the beaches of Southeast Asia to Times Square, New York City. Every sculpture is custom designed to meet the needs of my clients, from hair care product marketers to swimming pool manufacturers. I create fascinating, one of a kind displays using nothing but sand and water.”

Matt has travelled around the world as an original cast member of the Travel Channel show “Sand Masters” (along with Kirk Rademaker). Matt is the designer and manufacturer of Can You Dig It© Sand Tools and the Can You Dig It Sand Tools Super Deluxe Sand Sculpting Kit ™. These tools are endorsed by many professional sand sculptors and are used by thousands of beginner and intermediate sand sculpting enthusiasts around the world. Among other contest awards, Matt has placed in four World Championship events; once as a teammate of Kirk Rademaker’s on Team USA in 2014!

He donates his art and skills to many community causes in the New York area including several 9/11 Memorial sculptures. Through his art he supports the South Street Seaport, Building for America’s Bravest, The Stephen Siller Foundation, The National Lighthouse Museum, The Staten Island Children’s Museum, The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, and The March of Dimes.

A woodworker and wood restoration specialist by trade, his NYC based company of 40 years (FRW, LLC) has restored wood in many of New York’s (America’s) most cherished landmarks and is listed in the New York City Landmarks Conservancy “Restoration Directory”. Matt has three daughters and has been married for 40 years to the lovely Nina.
